I have started Beachbody’s 21 Day Fix! This plan combines daily 30 minute workouts with portioned meals. I was intrigued by this program mostly because it comes with different colored/sized containers to help you with portion control. Portion control is probably my biggest problem! I can’t seem to stop eating until I clear the whole plate!
Since I LOVE cooking I am excited to see what kind of YUMMY meals I can create with the restrictions that this program comes with. Depending on your weight, the program tells you which calorie group you fit in. The program comes with containers that are colored coordinated. Once you figure out what calorie group you are in, there is a chart that tells you how many portions of each colored container you can have.
I am in the 1200-1299 group. In this group I am allowed:
Green- 3 Green containers are for veggies.
Purple- 2 Purple containers are for your fruits.
Red- 4 Red containers are for your proteins.
Yellow- 2 Yellow containers are for carbs.
Blue- 1 Blue containers are for cheese and hummus.
Orange- 1 Orange containers are for nuts.
Teaspoons- 2 These are for healthy fats, like nut butters.
Now that I introduced you a little to what I am doing, we can get to the fun part, MENU panning! I will eat a meal/snack every 2-3 hours during the day.
BREAKFAST: Shakeology (red)
This is included in the 21 Day Fix program. I like drinking this first thing in the morning because its quick and easy. I can drink it while getting ready for work, or just take it with me for the ride to work. I picked the combo that comes with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. For the first day, I used the vanilla Shakeology, with 8 oz of water, and a handful of ice for a iced blended drink. The flavor is not bad but it is a little too sweet for me. Next time I will add some strawberries and hope the tartness of the strawberries will cover the sweetness. Its not a drink that I would say I LOVE but its definitely something I can consume everyday without it being a problem. I am also very hopeful they will taste really good with the different add ins you can mix in (fruits, honey, milk, etc). For the 21 Day Fix program, you can only add in certain things and only for a certain number of times each week. It is actually very filling, I might actually keep on buying this for a quick breakfast after the program. I’m excited to try the chocolate and strawberry flavors this week too!
The first workout of the week is a 30 minute total body cardio workout. HOLY CRAP, I am out of shape. I was getting sweaty after the “warm up” and completely out of breath after the first two workouts. I have to admit, I had to sit down at some points. Don’y judge me! Haha, we all have to start somewhere! Lets see if I can build up my endurance in time to finish the whole workout without stopping!
AM SNACK: 1 Slice Wheat Bread (yellow) and 2 TSP Sun Butter, Orange (purple)
Any diet where sun butter is allowed, is my kind of diet! Have you ever tried sun butter?! If you have not, go to the store right NOW and find it, then eat it, then thank me! Sun butter is made from sunflower seeds and is one of my weaknesses. Okay, back on topic now! A little bit after my workout, I toasted 1 piece of whole wheat toast and spread on thin layer (2 TSP) of sun butter. This is the perfect snack. I was really tempted to “eyeball” 2 TSP so I could try to be sneaky and get more than 2 TSP but I was good and got a TSP to measure. 2 TSP is just enough the spread it all over the bread.
Mmm, I LOVE oranges!
LUNCH: Whole Wheat Pasta (yellow), Cauliflower (green), Cheddar Cheese (blue)
I wanted to make mac and cheese so I did a little experiment. My boyfriend and I make mashed cauliflower a lot so I played with that idea to make a creamy cheese sauce for the pasta. I used spiral whole grain pasta which I boiled in water with no salt or oil. To make the sauce I boiled the cauliflower until they were tender. I took out the big pieces and put them on a plate with the pasta. I probably had half a container full of cauliflower left in the pot. I added the cauliflower from the pot to a small blender, I also added some of the water from the pot. I put enough water in the blender that it almost covered the cauliflower, of course you can adjust depending on how thin or thick you want it. I then added the cheese and a little bit of salt (next time I will add paprika and turmeric for some extra color and flavor) and blended it until it was super blended and was the consistency of a cheesy sauce. I poured it all over the pasta and cauliflower for a yummy lunch!
PM SNACK: Strawberries (purple) and Greek Yogurt (red)
I wanted to try something different. In my head I wanted to make a froyo but that didn’t happen. I pureed the strawberries and then added the greek yogurt to the mix with some stevia. When I froze it, it wasn’t as soft as I thought it would be, it was actually very solid. I ended up putting this frozen cube into an ice shaver and had a delicious shaved creamy strawberry treat! This would have also been great if I had popsicle molds to pour the mix into before freezing!
DINNER: Mixed Greens (green), Carrots and Celery (green), Salmon (red), Boiled Eggs (red), Asian Citrus Dressing (orange)
I had a big dinner today! I poached the salmon in my sous vide with a little salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, and lots of dill. I threw everything together for a yummy and very filling salad. I made my portion and also made a plate for my boyfriend. Our plates were fairly similar except he had a double portion of salmon and he added tomatoes. He was actually surprised by the amount of food I had on my plate!
This is a great meal plan for the week because only one meal needs to be cooked. All you need is one day to prepare!
I’ll be posting updates and meal ideas when I can!
Who wants to join me with 21 Day Fix now?!
